Astronaut Reveals Depression Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.
Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who became the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a online statement, referring to a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.
She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.
“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the deluge of misogyny.
She is best known for her pioneering work championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.
Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after an attack during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.
She noted that amid the criticism, considerable good had resulted from the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.
The group of women also featured accomplished professionals from multiple disciplines.
